Who can be a Mentor?
This program is open to Industry Professionals who typically have three or more years of professional workforce experience in a supervisory, management or leadership capacity and who have a willingness to share their expertise and experience.
Mentees are expected to drive the relationship as they may have different mentoring needs such as:
- Soft skills needed in industry
- Seeking and finding internship
- Job search skills
- The career path
- Personal and Professional development opportunities
The first meeting offers the perfect opportunity to discuss the Mentees specific needs and expectations. The Mentoring Agreement lists potential mentoring topics and offers a good starting point and structure the discussions.
The Express Connection process
Step 1: View Mentor profiles
Via the RMIT Mentoring Portal, students view the profiles of available Express mentors, including those suggested or found using the filter function.
Step 2: Request connection & await response
The student will simply select 'connect' on a mentor’s profile to initiate a Mentoring partnership. Students can send 3 requests & can also be connected with 3 Mentors at a time. In the mentoring request, any questions or topics are listed to cover in the mentoring connection. Mentors have 10 days to accept or decline the Mentees request
Step 3: Connected and meet
Once an Express connection is formed, Mentees message the mentor to arrange a time to meet either in person or virtually. The Express connection will be open within the portal for 4 weeks.
At any stage throughout this process, Mentors can also contact the RMIT Mentoring team to help the mentoring experience.

FAQs for Mentors
Here are some answers to questions you may have about the mentoring program.
Students will be allocated to a mentor at the start of each university semester. If for any reason Mentors are unable to mentor a student, they will need to inform the Mentoring team to reduce the Mentors availability. Students may also approach Mentors for one-off meetings or discussions; however, Mentors have the ability to control their availability to connect with students for one-off connections.
We encourage Mentors to discuss this with their Mentee in the first instance. Mentors need to identify their areas of concern regarding the partnership. If they are unable to resolve an issue within the partnership, they can seek advice and guidance from the RMIT Mentoring team: email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 03 9925 4006.
We will provide our full support to resolve the situation in a positive manner for both parties.
Yes absolutely. All Mentors have their maximum partnerships set at "1", but by editing your profile you can increase this default setting.
